Sarah Bird
University of Missouri
My educational background is themed by a love for learning and a
dedication toward hard work. I am attending the University of Missouri-
Columbia and am working towards a B.S. in Physics, emphasis in Astronomy, and
minors in Mathematics and Spanish. I have been interested in astronomy and
physics since I was a young child. While attending small private schools for
elementary school through high school, I choose to enroll in as many science
and math courses possible. I excelled in all of my classes and graduated high
school as a Valedictorian of my class in 2003. I have studied Spanish since
sixth grade and am proficient in speaking, comprehension, and writing.
.
My scientific interests center around astrophysics. I am very interested in
cosmology and studying the possible structures of the universe. I enjoy
studying the life cycle of stars from birth to such interesting lives as
variable stars like pulsars or RR Lyrae variables, supernovae, neutron stars,
or black holes. Gravitational waves are very interesting. The study of
galaxies such as active galaxies are enjoyable. I am also intrigued by comets
and asteroids. The planets in our solar system are exciting because they are
relatively close to earth as compared to other objects in the universe.
Providing service and being helpful are important social interests of mine.
Currently I volunteer at the Central Missouri Food Bank (a regional disaster
and hunger relief network) in Columbia and the St. Louis Dream Center (an
organization devoted to serving the urban St. Louis community). A strong
interest of mine is traveling and experiencing people and their cultures. I am
interested in outdoor activities such as canoing, camping, jogging, rock
climbing, mountaineering, and hiking. I enjoy having an FCC License (KC0YBW)
and using my VHF Radio Transceiver. I am excited to experience the city of
Laramie and its cultural activities, western rodeos, concerts, theatrical
productions, and festivals.
